Exclusive Friends' Event with Ruth Downie

Enjoy a fascinating and enlightening evening with local author, Ruth Downie. Most of Ruth's books are set in Roman Britain so her talk will include researching what Britain was like under Roman occupation, how the Romans and Britons got along, or didn’t, and why she writes about it. Also learn why her books are crime novels when she didn’t set out in that direction!  Since Ruth's main protagonist is a doctor,  she will also be sharing share some ancient medical cures that people definitely won’t want to try at home.

Ruth Downie is the author of a series of novels featuring Roman Army medic Gaius Petrieus Ruso, a man whose hopes of a quiet life are regularly dashed by unwanted murder investigations, by his British partner Tilla and by the demands of his family back home in the south of Gaul. The first book was a New York Times bestseller under the title Medicus.  Published as Ruso and the Disappearing Dancing Girls in the UK, The Times recommended it as one of their ‘seven best thrillers for Christmas’.  There are now eight novels and one novella in the series. When she isn’t writing, Ruth’s happiest moments are spent grovelling in mud with an archaeological trowel!

Ticket includes a glass of wine and freshly prepared Sri Lankan nibbles including coconut roti, aubergine moju and vegetable cutlets.
