Daphne du Maurier is one of our best-known writers, famed for novels such as Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel and Jamaica Inn. Born into an artistic dynasty, she defied convention and moved to Cornwall to pursue her ambition of becoming a writer. This revelatory book by Paul de Zulueta, Daphne du Maurier’s grandson, explores how the turbulence and contradictions of du Maurier's own life - spanning war, affairs, marriage, and unrequited love - inspired her writing. Drawing on private family archives, including previously unseen photos, and his own recollections of his grandmother, the author gives an extraordinary and moving portrait of Daphne du Maurier’s life.
About the Author: Paul de Zulueta is Daphne du Maurier’s eldest surviving grandchild, and son of Tessa, Daphne’s elder daughter. He spent his early 20’s in the army, and then went on to develop a career in adult education and personal development. Paul started writing in his 50’s and has written two other books: Peace, War and Whitehall, a ghosted memoir of Field Marshal Lord Guthrie, and Those Must Be The Guards, the authorised history of the Household Division 1969-2023.
